All her life, people have told 17-year-old tomboy Emma Wrangton that she’s not good enough, smart enough, or strong enough to succeed in life. Somewhere along the way, she started to believe them. Without the promise of a respectable future after graduation, all Emma wants is to cherish her senior year by playing basketball with the guys and spending as much time as possible with her best friend before he heads off to some fancy university, leaving her behind. But when the high school basketball coach recruits her to join the team—the girls’ team—Emma discovers life is anything but a slam dunk. How is she supposed to know how to be one of the girls when all she’s ever been is one of the guys?
Emma Wrangton knows how to play basketball. She knows when to pass, when to drive, when to shoot. She knows how to read the defense, how to adapt when a game takes an unexpected turn, and how to fearlessly face an opponent and fight for the win. Basketball is what she knows; basketball is what she’s good at. What she doesn’t know is how to trust herself when she’s confronted with life-altering decisions off the basketball court. Is it right to turn her back on the only life she’s ever known to face a future of uncertainty? Should she sacrifice her dream to spare herself and others additional heartache? Is it possible to let go of a lifetime of pain to find healing? Afraid to make the wrong decisions, she discovers shots worth taking aren’t always confined by the boundaries of a basketball court.
Emma Wrangton never thought she’d turn a losing team into a winning one or heal years of family heartache, but she did. Now, she is ready to embark on her new adventure. College.
But college is nothing like she expected.
As soon as Emma steps on the court, she finds herself in the middle of a team on the brink of self-destruction. Past betrayals have left open wounds, and without trust, their team is doomed to fail. If Emma wants to play, she has to learn that a true team isn’t built within the lines of a basketball court, but is she willing to fight for a team intent on destroying her and each other? She’ll have to look deep within herself to find the answer and face her traumatic past once and for all if she has any hope of finding true happiness in the future.
